Welcome to Techexcess’s basic guide to replacing your laptop LCD screen.
Replacing your laptop screen yourself will save you hundreds of dollars. The procedure is fairly simple but varies slightly from laptop to laptop. This document is provided to serve as a basic step-by-step guide to assist you through each part of the process.

0. Required tools

  • Small phillips screwdriver

  • Nimble fingers

1. Preparation

  • Unplug your laptop.

  • Ground yourself. Grounding yourself removes all static electricity from your body.

  • Grounding yourself is the most important step of any type of laptop repair.

  • Static electricity can damage your laptop. Ideally, to ground yourself, you want to touch an unpainted metal object that is attached to the ground.

  • However, simply touching an unpainted metal object in your home should do the job.

  • It is recommended to ground yourself periodically throughout the process, especially if you are working on carpet.

2. Bezel screw removal process

  • Visually inspect your laptop screen area. (The one that is currently in your laptop, not the one we sent you.)

  • A plastic bezel enclosure is currently securing your screen in place. First, you need to find the small rubber/plastic inserts or sometimes stickers which are covering the screws. There are usually four of these small covers, often measuring no more than a half inch or a couple centimeters.

  • Once you have identified the covers, remove them.

  • Set these aside. You will need to put these back into place when you are done.

3. Remove the plastic bezel

  • Split the plastic bezel. The bezel may or may not be adhered or attached. If you suspect the bezel is adhered, take care when separating the bezel as to not damage the plastic. Use your fingers to gradually separate the plastic at the seam along all edges.

  • Once the bezel has been removed, set this piece aside. You will need to put this bezel back into place when you are done.

4. Remove the screws which are holding screen in place

  • Identify the screws which are securing your screen in place. There are usually four of these screws often located near the corners of the screen.

  • Once you have identified the screws, use your screwdriver to gently remove them.

  • Set these screws aside. You will need to put these back into place when you are done.

5. Remove the inverter and the screen

  • The inverter looks like a green computer chip. Identify the wires that are attached from the inverter to the screen.

  • Once you have found the inverter and where the plug is, carefully remove the plug. (There may be more than one plug on more expensive laptops.)

6. Remove the flex cable attached to the motherboard

  • Identify the flex cable. The final cable holding in your screen is attached to the motherboard.

  • Carefully unplug the flex cable by applying equal amounts of pressure to both ends of the connecting plug. Gradually alternating pressure from one end to the other is a good technique. Be careful not to bend or damage the pins or the plug.

7. Remove the screen

  • There should be nothing left attaching the screen to your laptop.

  • Remove the screen.

  • Set the screen aside.

8. Install your new screen

  • To install your new screen, take the screen you received from us and perform the previous steps in reverse order.
